The incident took place around 4:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 23, at the bakery in Hartford County located at 1414 Blue Hills Ave. in Bloomfield.

According to Blue Hills Fire Chief Willie Jones, firefighters arriving on the scene found several drums containing about 200 gallons of sulfuric acid under a tent-life structure burning.

Afraid the chemicals could cause a hazard, the building was evacuated and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was called to respond to the scene, Jones said.

Firefighters let the fire burn off rather than use water to avoid a chemical reaction, the chief added.

The chemicals began to leak and firefighters created a damned dyke to divert runoff into an area storm drain, Jones said.

Once DEEP was on the scene, they said the fire could be extinguished, he added.

The fire was out by around 7:30 a.m.

No one was injured, the chief said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Blue Hills Fire Marshal.
